Description

Homemade crispy fried onions that are golden, crunchy, and full of flavor. Perfect as a topping for salads, burgers, curries, and soups. Easy to make with just three ingredients and a few simple steps.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • Oil, as needed for deep-frying

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the onion thinly and evenly using a sharp knife or mandoline for uniform cooking.
  2. Place the sliced onions in a large bowl and toss them with cornstarch until lightly and evenly coated.
  3. Shake off any excess cornstarch using a fine mesh strainer or colander to prevent clumping.
  4. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the onions in small batches until they turn golden brown and crisp, stirring occasionally for even frying.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Allow the onions to cool completely so they crisp up fully before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Use yellow onions for the best balance of sweetness and flavor, though red or white onions can also work.
  • Cornstarch creates a lighter, crispier coating than flour.
  • Do not overcrowd the frying pan; it lowers the oil temperature and prevents crisping.
  • Let the onions cool completely before storing to maintain their crunch.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
