Description

A fresh and flavorful Thai-inspired dish made with gently cooked ground beef, bright lime juice, aromatic herbs, and crisp lettuce leaves, perfect for a light yet satisfying meal that balances savory, spicy, sweet, and sour notes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 ounces ground beef
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 tablespoon toasted rice powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes, adjust to taste
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
  • 4 green onions, chopped
  • Just under 1/4 cup shallots, chopped
  • 1 head lettuce, butter lettuce or iceberg recommended

Instructions

  1. Add the ground beef and water to a skillet set over medium heat. Cook gently, breaking the meat apart, until just cooked through and tender. Avoid browning or overcooking.
  2. Transfer the warm cooked beef to a mixing bowl. Add the toasted rice powder, chili flakes, lime juice, fish sauce, and white sugar, then toss gently until evenly combined.
  3. Fold in the chopped green onions, cilantro, and shallots, stirring lightly so the herbs remain fresh and aromatic.
  4. Separate the lettuce leaves and pat them dry. Lay a leaf flat on a plate or in your palm.
  5. Spoon a generous amount of the seasoned beef mixture into the center of the lettuce leaf and serve immediately, optionally with a dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • Cook the beef gently to keep it moist and tender.
  • Add fresh herbs only after the beef has cooled slightly to prevent wilting.
  • Dry the lettuce thoroughly to maintain crisp texture.
  • Adjust lime juice, fish sauce, and chili flakes to achieve a balanced flavor.
  • Serve immediately for the best contrast of warm filling and cool lettuce.
